BITE-SIZED GUIDE

A new year built around attention and hope

Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year.” It opens the Jewish new year with festive meals, prayer and reflection. Many communities treat it as a chance to notice where life is heading and choose how to move forward.

A shofar is a ram’s horn traditionally sounded as a wake-up call: pay attention, return to what matters and begin again. Apples dipped in honey express hope for a sweet year, while a festive table makes that hope tangible through hospitality and shared food.

Practices vary across families and communities. A common greeting is Shanah tovah, Hebrew for “a good year.” You do not need extensive background knowledge to use the holiday as a moment for honest reflection and a hopeful next step.
