The screen-free table is getting younger
Mah jongg, a four-player tile game, has escaped the “grandmother game” label and landed with twenty-somethings who want a screen-free table. JTA found camp tables filling up, college-age players learning from relatives, and new clubs treating the difficulty as part of the draw. The point is not nostalgia; it is a social format with conversation and something to do with your hands. If you know someone who plays, you could ask for a beginner round before Sunday and expect to be confused before it clicks.

Challah for a table of two
A one-cup-flour challah, a braided Friday-night bread, solves a problem full-size recipes miss, but its small size hides the real tradeoff. The Nosher’s mini loaf uses four short strands, takes about 17–20 minutes in the oven and can become French toast or grilled cheese if it survives the first night. The tradeoff is time, not scale: two rises mean the full process can stretch past four hours. If you try it, you could start early and treat the braid as the experiment, not a test of competence. Some people use a round loaf for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, while others make one whenever a small table needs bread; both work.

David and Jonathan, read again
David and Jonathan’s story can support more than one honest reading, and a new essay makes the queer case without pretending the text is simple. It points to souls “bound up,” repeated covenants, a kiss and shared tears, Saul’s hostile reaction, and David saying Jonathan’s love surpassed the love of women. Plenty of readers still understand the bond as profound friendship; the useful tension is that the language leaves room for another reading that LGBTQ+ Jews recognize immediately. You could read 1 Samuel 18:1 and 20:41, then 2 Samuel 1:26, and decide which details your earlier interpretation had trained you to overlook.
